The state sequence for a student therefore starts with a number of zeros until he passes the first module. The states in which a student could be are the number of courses already passed by him. Suppose also that the students have to finish all the courses in a specified length of time. At regular intervals, say monthly, the institution keeps track of the number of courses each student has passed. A state sequence can also give rise to an event sequence by considering the transitions from one state to another as an event.Ĭonsider a distance learning institution where students complete a prescribed number of courses at their own pace. In a business context an event sequence could consist of news events such as the appointment of new CEO, release of financial figures, announcement of a new marketing campaign or a product launch. Event sequences associate an event with a specific time point. State sequences therefore consist of stretches of times during which an entity is in a particular state. In a disease treatment study states could be pre-diagnosed, diagnosed, hospitalized, in rehab, in remission or cured. In a social sciences setting such sequences could be the marital state of individuals, such as single, married or divorced. State sequences describe the succession of states. Cornwell stops at every station along what is arguably the most important pathway for gaining insight into the social world with elegant methodological contributions that should change how we do social science. There are two kinds of sequences that can be anlyzed, state sequences and event sequences. ‘Social Sequence Analysis beautifully links two of the major revolutionary developments in social science over the past three decades - networks and sequences - to make sense of the deeply ordered nature of social life. Laurent Lesnard - CNRS Professor of Sociology, Sciences Po, France Benjamin Cornwell has written a much-needed book that should prove invaluable to social scientists interested in sequence analysis.'

It provides useful guidance into the different families of statistical methods adapted to sequences that emerged in the social sciences a couple of decades ago. ‘Social Sequence Analysis: Methods and Applications offers the first comprehensive look at sequence analysis for the social sciences. Keohane Professor of Sociology, Duke University Well written, clearly argued, and filled with practical guides, this is a methods text for all thinking social scientists.' This book provides the tools needed to think about social sequences in a grounded, pragmatic fashion in a way that opens new doors for social theory. Taking up the charge first raised by Andrew Abbott many years ago, this book provides a careful and detailed examination of the history and theoretical grounding of sequence methods in the social sciences.
